Reel Bay (Coffee House Press) is a remarkable, genre-bending essay about Jana's search for the real Takako Konishi. This captivating essay leans into the space between fact and fiction, life and death, author and subject, reality and delusion.

Author Talk: Ramsey County Library Online Event
Jana Larson shares her experiences researching and writing Reel Bay: A Cinematic Essay, a genre-blending book that is equal parts memoir, mystery, reclaimed screenplay, and travelogue. In the book, Larson asks what happened to Takako Konishi, the Japanese woman found dead outside Detroit Lakes, Minnesota in 2001. Konishi's death has spawned an urban legend about her search for the money in the movie Fargo, capturing the attention of the media and filmmakers. Although her death was ultimately ruled a suicide, speculation remains about what drove her to kill herself so far from home.
Publication Launch
January 19th is the publication date of Reel Bay: A Cinematic Essay by Jana Larson, an unconventional and contemplative nonfiction book on the mysterious death of a young Japanese woman.
